How Age Calculation Works
Age Calculator is a tool that computes the exact elapsed time between a birthdate and today. It returns your chronological age -- the number of complete years, months, and days since you were born.
The calculation method
Age is calculated by comparing two dates -- your birthdate and today:
- Years: Subtract the birth year from the current year. If today's date is before your birthday this year, subtract 1.
- Months: Count the remaining full months after the year difference. If today's day of the month is earlier than your birth day, subtract 1 month and carry the days.
- Days: Count the remaining days after accounting for full years and months.
Leap year handling
A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except for century years that are not divisible by 400. Leap years have 366 days instead of 365. The extra day (February 29) affects total-day calculations but does not change your age in years.
If you were born on February 29, your birthday only occurs every 4 years. In non-leap years, most legal systems and conventions treat either February 28 or March 1 as the equivalent date.
Total days formula
To convert age to days, this calculator counts every day between the two dates, including all leap days. This is more accurate than multiplying years by 365 because it accounts for the actual leap years in your lifetime.
- Total Days = (Today - Birthdate) in milliseconds / 86,400,000
- Total Weeks = Total Days / 7 (rounded down)
- Total Hours = Total Days x 24
Worked Examples
Standard calculation
Born: March 15, 1990
Today: February 4, 2026
Years: 2026 - 1990 = 36, but birthday hasn't passed yet -- 35 years
Months: Feb is 11 months after March -- but day 4 < day 15 -- 10 months
Days: 31 (Jan) - 15 + 4 = 20 days
Age: 35 years, 10 months, 20 days
Born on a leap day
Born: February 29, 2000
Today: February 4, 2026
2026 is not a leap year. Last birthday was Feb 28, 2025 (or March 1, depending on convention).
Age: 25 years, 11 months, 7 days
Age in days
Born: January 1, 2000
Today: February 4, 2026
Total: 9,531 days (includes 7 leap days: 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024)
Weeks: 1,361 weeks
Month-end edge case
Born: January 31, 1995
Today: February 4, 2026
Since Feb has no 31st, the last "monthly anniversary" was Jan 31 -- 4 days ago.
Age: 31 years, 0 months, 4 days
Age Counting Systems Around the World
Not everyone counts age the same way:
- Western system (international standard): Age starts at 0 at birth. You turn 1 on your first birthday. This is the system used by this calculator and in most legal, medical, and official contexts worldwide.
- East Asian age (traditional): A baby is considered 1 year old at birth. Everyone gains a year on New Year's Day (Lunar or January 1), not on their individual birthday. A baby born on December 31 would be "2 years old" the very next day by this system. South Korea officially switched to the Western system in June 2023.
- Korean counting age: Korea historically used both the traditional system and the "year age" system (based on birth year minus current year + 1). The legal standard is now "man nai," which matches the Western system.
Common Mistakes
- Forgetting the birthday hasn't passed yet. If your birthday is in October and today is February, you haven't turned a year older yet. Subtract 1 from the simple year difference.
- Multiplying years by 365 for total days. This misses leap days. Over 30 years, that's about 7-8 days off. Always count actual days between the two dates.
- Confusing completed years with running year. A 2-year-old is "in their third year of life" but their age is 2. Age counts completed years.
- Month-end confusion. If you were born on the 31st and the current month only has 30 (or 28/29) days, the day calculation needs to borrow from the previous month's length, not assume 30 days.
- Time zone differences on the birthdate. If you were born just before midnight in one time zone, it might be the next calendar day in another. This calculator uses your browser's local date, not a specific time zone.
Age Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate my exact age?
Subtract your birth year from the current year, then adjust based on whether your birthday has occurred yet this year. For the month and day portion, compare your birth month/day to today's month/day. This calculator does this automatically -- enter your birthdate and see your exact age in years, months, and days instantly.
How many days old am I?
Your age in days is the total number of days between your birthdate and today, including any leap days. For a quick estimate: years x 365.25. For an exact count, use this calculator -- it counts every day individually.
How does a leap year affect age calculation?
Leap years (every 4 years, with exceptions) add one day -- February 29. Your age in years is not affected, but your total days alive includes every leap day that occurred during your lifetime. If born on Feb 29, you technically have a birthday only every 4 years; non-leap years treat Feb 28 or March 1 as the equivalent.
What if I was born on February 29?
In non-leap years, there is no February 29. Legal conventions vary: some jurisdictions consider March 1 as your birthday, others use February 28. For age calculation, this tool counts complete years normally -- your age increases by 1 each year, not just in leap years.
What is chronological age vs. biological age?
Chronological age is the exact time elapsed since birth. Biological age reflects how well your body is functioning relative to its chronological age. A 50-year-old with excellent health markers might have a biological age of 40. This calculator measures chronological age only.
How is age calculated in Korea and East Asia?
Traditionally in East Asia, a baby is 1 year old at birth and gains a year every New Year's Day. A child born on December 31 would be "2 years old" the next day (January 1). South Korea switched to the international (Western) system in June 2023 for legal and official purposes.
How do I calculate age between two dates?
The method is the same: subtract the earlier date from the later date. Count complete years, then remaining months, then remaining days. This gives the exact elapsed time between any two dates, not just birth to today.
How many weeks are in a human lifetime?
At the global average life expectancy of about 73 years: 73 x 52.18 = roughly 3,809 weeks. In countries with higher life expectancy (80+ years): approximately 4,174 weeks. Your current week count is shown in the statistics section above.
Why is my total months count not exactly years x 12?
Total months = (complete years x 12) + remaining months. If you are 30 years and 5 months old, your total is (30 x 12) + 5 = 365 months. The count only equals years x 12 on your exact birthday when remaining months = 0.
Does this calculator store my birthdate?
No. All calculations run in your browser using JavaScript. Your birthdate is never transmitted to any server, stored in any database, or logged in any way. You can verify this by using the tool offline after the page loads.

Age Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate my exact age?
Subtract your birth year from the current year to get a rough age in years, then adjust for whether your birthday has occurred yet this year. For exact age in months and days, compare the month and day of your birthdate to today's date, borrowing from the previous month if today's day is smaller than your birth day.
How many days old am I?
To find your age in days, count every day from your birthdate to today. This includes leap days that fell within that range. For example, someone born on January 1, 2000 would be 9,531 days old on February 4, 2026. Use an age calculator for an exact count.
How does a leap year affect age calculation?
Leap years add one extra day (February 29) every four years (with exceptions for century years not divisible by 400). This affects total-day counts but not your age in years. If you were born on February 29, most conventions treat March 1 as your birthday in non-leap years.
What is the difference between chronological age and biological age?
Chronological age is the time elapsed since birth, measured in years, months, and days. Biological age reflects physiological condition and how well the body functions relative to the expected norm. This calculator computes chronological age. Biological age requires medical assessments.
How is age calculated in different cultures?
In the Western system, age starts at 0 at birth and increases by 1 on each birthday. In the East Asian age system (used traditionally in Korea, China, and other countries), a baby is considered 1 at birth and gains a year every New Year's Day, not on their birthday. South Korea officially switched to the Western system in 2023.
How do I calculate age between two dates?
Use the same method as calculating age from a birthdate: subtract the earlier date from the later date. Count complete years first, then remaining months, then remaining days. This gives you the exact duration between any two dates.
Why does my age in months not equal years times 12?
Your age in total months equals (complete years x 12) + remaining months. For example, if you are 25 years and 7 months old, your total months are (25 x 12) + 7 = 307. The years-times-12 shortcut only works if the remaining months are zero (i.e., it is exactly your birthday).
How many weeks are in a year?
A standard year has 52 weeks and 1 day (365 / 7 = 52.143). A leap year has 52 weeks and 2 days. So total weeks lived is approximately your age in years x 52, though the exact count depends on leap years within your lifetime.
Does this calculator store my birthdate?
No. All calculations happen in your browser using JavaScript. Your birthdate is never sent to any server, stored, or logged.
