When to Use Bar Charts
Bar charts work best when:
- You want to compare values across different categories
- You have discrete categories (not continuous data)
- You need to show rankings or differences between items
- Your data includes negative values
- You have many categories (more than 5-7)
Consider a pie chart instead if you want to show parts of a whole (percentages that sum to 100%).
Tips for Better Bar Charts
- Start the y-axis at zero to avoid misleading comparisons
- Use horizontal bars when labels are long
- Sort bars by value when ranking matters
- Use consistent colors, or highlight specific bars with accent colors
- Add data labels for precise values, especially in presentations
- Keep the number of bars reasonable (under 15-20 for readability)
Bar Chart vs Column Chart
Technically, vertical bars are called "column charts" and horizontal bars are "bar charts." This tool creates both — use the orientation toggle to switch between them. Horizontal bars work better for long category names, while vertical columns feel more natural for time-series data.
