How This Calculator Works

The brick calculator uses a straightforward area-based method:

Step 1: Calculate Wall Area

Wall Area = Length x Height

Step 2: Calculate Bricks Per Square Foot

Each brick's face area (including one mortar joint on each exposed edge) determines how many fit in a square foot:

Bricks/sq ft = 144 / [(Brick Length + Mortar) x (Brick Height + Mortar)]

The 144 comes from 12 x 12 = 144 square inches in one square foot.

Step 3: Total Bricks

Total = Wall Area x Bricks/sq ft x (1 + Waste%)

Step 4: Mortar Estimate

Mortar volume is estimated from the total mortar joint area times the wall depth (brick width). One 80 lb bag of premixed mortar covers approximately 0.15 cubic feet, enough for roughly 12-15 modular bricks.

Tips for Estimating Bricks

  • Always round up -- you cannot buy half a brick, and running short mid-project is costly.
  • Account for openings -- subtract the area of doors and windows from your total wall area before calculating.
  • Waste factor matters -- use 5% for simple straight walls, 10% for projects with cuts or corners, and up to 15% for arches, curves, or decorative patterns.
