About Density
Density is a measure of how much mass is packed into a given volume. The formula is:
density = mass / volume
The SI unit of density is kg/m3 (kilograms per cubic meter). In everyday use, g/cm3 is also common, where water has a convenient density of exactly 1 g/cm3 at 4 degrees C.
Objects with density less than water (1000 kg/m3) float; objects with higher density sink. This principle is why ships made of steel (density ~7850 kg/m3) float -- their hollow shape means their average density is less than water.
