Exponent Rules

Basic Power Rule

bn = b × b × b × ... (n times)

Multiply the base by itself n times.

Zero Exponent

b0 = 1 (for any b ≠ 0)

Any non-zero number raised to the power of 0 equals 1.

Negative Exponent

b-n = 1 / bn

A negative exponent means take the reciprocal.

Example: 2-3 = 1/23 = 1/8 = 0.125

Fractional Exponent

bm/n = n√(bm) = (n√b)m

A fractional exponent represents a root. The denominator is the root index, the numerator is the power.

Example: 82/3 = ∛(82) = ∛64 = 4

Special Bases

BaseValueCommon Uses
e (Euler's number)≈ 2.71828...Natural growth, compound interest
1010Scientific notation, decibels
22Binary, computing, data sizes
💡 Tip: Enter "e" as the base to use Euler's number (≈ 2.71828). For fractional exponents, you can enter either "1/2" or "0.5".
