Calculate What You Need on Your Final Exam

Enter your current grade, the grade you want, and how much the final counts. The calculator shows the exact score you need.

How the Final Grade Formula Works

The Final Grade Calculator uses the weighted average formula to find the minimum score you need on your final exam. Your course grade is split into two parts: everything before the final and the final itself.

Required Score = (Target × 100 − Current × (100 − Weight)) ÷ Weight

Where:

  • Current = your grade so far (all coursework except the final)
  • Target = the overall course grade you want to finish with
  • Weight = the percentage the final exam counts toward your total grade

This formula works because your final course grade is a weighted average:

Final Course Grade = Current × (1 − Weight/100) + Final Score × (Weight/100)

The calculator solves this equation for "Final Score" given your inputs.

Worked Examples

Example 1: Maintaining a B+ (typical case)

You have an 87% in the course. The final is worth 25%. You want to keep at least an 85% (B).

Required = (85 × 100 − 87 × 75) ÷ 25 = (8500 − 6525) ÷ 25 = 79.00%

You need a 79% on the final — achievable with solid preparation.

Example 2: Reaching for an A (stretch goal)

You have an 88% in the course. The final is worth 30%. You want a 93% (A).

Required = (93 × 100 − 88 × 70) ÷ 30 = (9300 − 6160) ÷ 30 = 104.67%

You would need 104.67% — not possible without extra credit. An A is out of reach; aim for an A- (90%) instead, which requires (90 × 100 − 88 × 70) ÷ 30 = 94.67%.

Example 3: Already safe (low stress)

You have a 95% in the course. The final is worth 20%. You want at least a 90% (A).

Required = (90 × 100 − 95 × 80) ÷ 20 = (9000 − 7600) ÷ 20 = 70.00%

A 70% on the final still gets you an A. Room to breathe.

Quick Reference

Common scenarios with a final worth 30% of the course grade:

Current GradeTarget GradeScore Needed on Final
90%90% (A)90.00%
85%90% (A)101.67%
85%85% (B+)85.00%
80%80% (B)80.00%
75%80% (B)91.67%
70%70% (C)70.00%

Pattern: if your current grade equals your target, you need the same score on the final. The further apart they are, the harder the final has to work.

What Changes the Required Score Most?

  • Final exam weight: A heavier final gives you more room to recover — but also more risk. A 40%-weight final lets you make up ground; a 15%-weight final barely moves the needle.
  • Gap between current and target: The bigger the gap, the higher the required score. Small gaps (2–3%) are usually recoverable. Large gaps (10%+) often aren't.
  • Your current grade: If you're already above your target, the required final score drops below your target — less pressure.

Tips for Using This Calculator

  • Find your current grade from your LMS (Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle) or calculate it with a weighted grade calculator.
  • Check the syllabus for the final exam weight. Some courses list it as a percentage; others show point values you'll need to convert.
  • Try multiple targets to see the range. What do you need for an A? For a B? This helps you prioritize study time across courses.
  • Account for extra credit if available — your effective maximum score may exceed 100%.

Final Grade Calculator FAQ

What is the formula for calculating the required final exam score?

Required Final Score = (Target Grade × 100 − Current Grade × (100 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight. For example, if your current grade is 82%, your target is 90%, and the final is worth 40%, you need (90 × 100 − 82 × 60) ÷ 40 = 102.5% — which means a 90% is not reachable.

What does final exam weight mean?

Final exam weight is the percentage of your total course grade that comes from the final exam. If a syllabus says the final is worth 30%, it means 30% of your course grade is determined by the final exam and the remaining 70% comes from other coursework like assignments, quizzes, and midterms.

What if the calculator says I need more than 100%?

If the required score exceeds 100%, it means your target grade is mathematically impossible to reach through the final exam alone. You may need to adjust your target grade, check if extra credit is available, or talk to your instructor about other options.

How do I find my current grade before the final?

Check your school's learning management system (Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, etc.) for a running grade total. Alternatively, use a weighted grade calculator to compute your current grade from individual assignment scores and their weights.

Does this calculator work for weighted grading systems?

Yes. The calculator uses the weighted average formula. Your current grade represents all coursework excluding the final, and the final weight is the percentage the final contributes to the total course grade. The formula works regardless of how the non-final portion is structured.

Can I use this for midterm exams too?

Yes. The formula works for any single exam or assignment. Enter your grade so far (excluding the exam), the weight of that exam, and your target grade. The math is the same whether it is a midterm, final, or any weighted component.

What is a good target grade to aim for?

That depends on your goals. Common thresholds are 90% for an A, 80% for a B, and 70% for a C in most US grading systems. For Dean's List, scholarships, or graduate school, check the specific GPA or grade requirements of your institution.

Is my data private?

Yes. All calculations run locally in your browser using JavaScript. No grade data is sent to any server. When you refresh the page, your inputs are cleared completely.
