Tip: FOV depends on sensor size. A 50mm lens gives ~47° on full frame, but only ~32° on APS-C (equivalent to ~75mm full frame).

About Field of View

Field of View (FOV) measures how much of a scene is visible through a camera, lens, or display. It's expressed in degrees — a wider angle means you can see more of the scene.

Horizontal vs Vertical FOV: Most specifications list horizontal FOV. Vertical FOV depends on the aspect ratio. For 16:9 displays, vertical FOV is about 56% of horizontal FOV.

FOV and Focal Length: For cameras, shorter focal lengths (like 24mm) give wider FOV, while longer focal lengths (like 200mm) give narrower, more "zoomed in" views. The relationship also depends on sensor size.

Gaming FOV: Higher FOV lets you see more of the game world but can cause distortion at the edges. Most PC gamers prefer 90-110° for a good balance of peripheral vision and natural appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What FOV should I use for gaming?

It depends on your viewing distance and screen size. For PC gaming at desk distance, 90-110° is typical. For console gaming on a TV across the room, 60-75° feels more natural. Use our visualizer to see how different values look.

How do I convert focal length to FOV?

Use the formula: FOV = 2 × arctan(sensor width ÷ (2 × focal length)). Our converter above does this automatically for common sensor sizes.

Why does my GoPro footage look distorted?

Action cameras use very wide FOV (120-170°) to capture more of the scene. This causes barrel distortion — straight lines appear curved near the edges. It's a tradeoff for capturing more in the frame.

What's the human eye's FOV?

Each human eye has about 120° horizontal FOV, but only ~55° is sharp central vision. Combined binocular vision gives us roughly 180° horizontal coverage with peripheral vision.
