About This Tool
This converter uses the equal temperament formula to calculate the relationship between frequencies and musical notes. Each octave doubles the frequency, and each semitone multiplies the frequency by the 12th root of 2 (≈ 1.0595).
The Formula
f = A4 × 2(n-69)/12
Where n is the MIDI note number (A4 = 69) and f is the frequency in Hz.
What Are Cents?
A cent is 1/100th of a semitone. Musicians use cents to measure how sharp or flat a pitch is relative to the nearest note. ±5 cents is generally imperceptible, while ±15 cents is noticeable.
Tuning Standards
- 440 Hz: Modern standard (ISO 16)
- 442-443 Hz: Common orchestral tuning in Europe
- 432 Hz: "Scientific" or "Verdi" pitch
- 415 Hz: Baroque tuning (one semitone lower)
