Understanding Horsepower
Horsepower (hp) is a unit of power originally defined by James Watt to compare the output of steam engines with the power of draft horses. There are actually several definitions of horsepower used today.
π§ Mechanical Horsepower
The most common type, used for engines and motors in the US and UK.
πͺπΊ Metric Horsepower (PS)
Used in Europe and Asia. "PS" stands for PferdestΓ€rke (German for horsepower).
β‘ Electrical Horsepower
Used for electric motors, exactly defined.
π‘οΈ Boiler Horsepower
Used for steam boilers, much larger than mechanical hp.
This converter uses mechanical horsepower (745.699872 W), which is the most common type you'll encounter for car engines, power tools, and industrial equipment.
Watts (W) is the SI unit of power, named after James Watt. One watt equals one joule of energy per second. For larger values, kilowatts (kW) are often used β 1 kW = 1000 W.
Fun fact: The average human can sustain about 75 watts (0.1 hp) of power output, while a trained cyclist can briefly produce over 2000 watts (2.7 hp) during a sprint!
