How Land Area is Calculated

The formula used depends on the shape of the land:

Rectangle

Area = Length x Width

Most common for residential lots and farm fields. Multiply two perpendicular sides.

Triangle

Area = (Base x Height) / 2

Useful for corner lots or wedge-shaped parcels. The height must be perpendicular to the base.

Circle

Area = pi x Radius^2

Used for circular irrigation zones, roundabout areas, or circular pond boundaries.

Trapezoid

Area = (Base1 + Base2) / 2 x Height

Common in irregularly bounded parcels where two opposite sides are parallel but of different lengths, such as lots along a curved road.

Irregular Shapes

For irregularly shaped land that does not fit a standard geometry, break the plot into simpler shapes (rectangles, triangles, etc.) and add the areas together. You can also enter the total area directly if you already know it from a survey, deed, or GPS measurement.

Understanding Land Measurement Units

Acre

An acre is the most common unit for measuring land in the United States and United Kingdom. One acre equals exactly 43,560 square feet. Historically, an acre was defined as the amount of land a yoke of oxen could plow in one day. A square acre measures approximately 208.7 feet on each side. For context, a standard American football field (without end zones) is about 1.1 acres.

Hectare

A hectare is the standard metric unit for land area, used in most countries outside the US. One hectare equals 10,000 square meters (100 m x 100 m), or about 2.471 acres. It is widely used in agriculture, forestry, and land-use planning around the world.

Square Foot and Square Meter

Square feet (sq ft) and square meters (sq m) are the most granular units used for measuring smaller plots, building lots, and indoor areas. One square meter equals approximately 10.764 square feet. These units are common in real estate listings and construction projects.

Square Yard

A square yard equals 9 square feet (3 ft x 3 ft). It is sometimes used in land measurement in the UK and India. One acre contains 4,840 square yards.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate land area?

Land area depends on the shape of the plot. For a rectangle, multiply length by width. For a triangle, multiply base by height and divide by 2. For a circle, use pi times the radius squared (pi x r^2). For a trapezoid, add the two parallel sides, divide by 2, then multiply by the height. For irregular shapes, break the plot into simpler shapes and sum the areas.

How many square feet are in an acre?

One acre contains exactly 43,560 square feet. A square plot measuring one acre would be approximately 208.7 feet on each side. An acre is roughly the size of a standard football field (without end zones).

How many acres is my lot?

To find how many acres your lot is, first calculate the total area in square feet (length x width for a rectangular lot), then divide by 43,560. For example, a 100 ft x 200 ft lot is 20,000 square feet, or about 0.459 acres. Use this calculator to get the exact conversion instantly.

What is the difference between an acre and a hectare?

An acre is 43,560 square feet (approximately 4,047 square meters). A hectare is 10,000 square meters (approximately 107,639 square feet, or 2.471 acres). Hectares are the international metric standard; acres are commonly used in the US, UK, and some other countries.

How do I calculate area for an irregularly shaped lot?

For irregular lots, break the shape into simpler geometric shapes (rectangles, triangles, trapezoids) and calculate each piece separately, then sum them up. If you have a survey or GPS measurement that gives you the total area in one unit, enter it in the "Irregular" mode of this calculator to convert to all other units.

How big is a quarter-acre lot?

A quarter-acre lot is 10,890 square feet (about 1,012 square meters). If square, it would measure approximately 104 feet on each side. This is a common size for suburban residential lots in many US neighborhoods.

How many square feet are in an acre?

One acre contains exactly 43,560 square feet. An acre is roughly the size of a football field without the end zones (which is 48,000 sq ft). A square plot of one acre measures approximately 208.7 feet on each side.

How many acres is my lot?

To find how many acres your lot is, first calculate the total area in square feet (length x width for a rectangle), then divide by 43,560. For example, a 100 ft x 200 ft lot is 20,000 sq ft, or about 0.459 acres.

What is the difference between an acre and a hectare?

An acre is 43,560 square feet (approximately 4,047 square meters), while a hectare is 10,000 square meters (approximately 107,639 square feet or 2.471 acres). Hectares are used in most countries; acres are common in the US, UK, and a few other nations.

How do I calculate area for an irregularly shaped lot?

For irregular lots, break the shape into simpler shapes (rectangles, triangles) and calculate each piece separately, then add them together. Professional land surveys use GPS coordinates and specialized software for precise measurements.
