How to Calculate Board Feet

Board Feet = (Thickness × Width × Length) / 12

Actual dimensions: 1.5" thick x 3.5" wide x 8' long

- 15% - Complex projects with angled cuts, first-time builders, or multiple board sizes
- 20% - Intricate designs, pattern decking, or projects requiring grade selection
Round up to the next full board when ordering. You can't buy 50.5 boards - you need 51.
Project-Specific Tips
Framing
For wall framing, calculate studs at 16" on-center: divide wall length in inches by 16, then add 1. Don't forget top and bottom plates (3 boards total per wall length), corner studs, and extra framing around windows and doors. Standard wall height is 8 feet, so use 8' studs for most residential framing.
Decking
Calculate deck surface area (length × width). For joists, space 16" on-center for residential decks. For deck boards, account for 1/8" to 1/4" gaps between boards for drainage and expansion. A 5.5" board (2x6) with 1/4" gap covers 5.75" of deck width. Add extra for rim joists, beams, and stair stringers.
Fencing
For horizontal fence boards, calculate total linear feet of fence, multiply by fence height, then divide by board coverage (accounting for overlap or gaps). For posts, space 6-8 feet apart. Set posts in concrete for stability. Add extra boards for gates and bracing.
