Mulch Depth Guide

How deep you should spread mulch depends on the type. Using the correct depth prevents weeds while still allowing water and air to reach plant roots.

Mulch Type Recommended Depth Best For
Shredded Hardwood 2 -- 3 inches Garden beds, paths, slopes (stays in place)
Wood Chips 3 -- 4 inches Trees, shrubs, large beds
Pine Bark Nuggets 3 -- 4 inches Decorative beds, acid-loving plants
Pine Straw 3 -- 4 inches Slopes, acid-loving plants, under trees
Rubber Mulch 1.5 -- 2 inches Playgrounds, permanent beds
Cocoa Hulls 1 -- 2 inches Small decorative beds (avoid with pets)
Straw 4 -- 6 inches Vegetable gardens, new lawns
Compost 1 -- 2 inches Top dressing for garden beds
Do not pile mulch against tree trunks or plant stems (avoid "mulch volcanoes"). Leave a 2-3 inch gap around the base of trees and plants to prevent rot and pest issues.

Coverage Reference Table

Quick reference showing how much area one cubic yard of mulch covers at various depths.

Depth 1 Cu Yd Covers 1 Bag (2 cu ft) Covers 1 Bag (3 cu ft) Covers
1 inch 324 sq ft 24 sq ft 36 sq ft
2 inches 162 sq ft 12 sq ft 18 sq ft
3 inches 108 sq ft 8 sq ft 12 sq ft
4 inches 81 sq ft 6 sq ft 9 sq ft
6 inches 54 sq ft 4 sq ft 6 sq ft

How This Calculator Works

This tool calculates the volume of mulch you need using a simple formula:

Volume (cu ft) = Area (sq ft) x Depth (inches) / 12

The area depends on the shape of your bed:

  • Rectangle: Area = Length x Width
  • Circle: Area = pi x Radius^2
  • Triangle: Area = 0.5 x Base x Height

To convert cubic feet to cubic yards, divide by 27 (since 1 cubic yard = 3 ft x 3 ft x 3 ft = 27 cubic feet). Bag counts are calculated by dividing total cubic feet by the bag size (2 or 3 cubic feet), then rounding up to whole bags.

Weight estimates assume an average of 600 lbs per cubic yard for wood-based mulch. Actual weight depends on mulch type and moisture content -- freshly chipped wet mulch can weigh up to 1,000 lbs per cubic yard, while dry shredded mulch may weigh around 400 lbs.

Tips for Buying and Applying Mulch

Bagged vs. Bulk

For small projects (under 2 cubic yards), bagged mulch is convenient. You can carry it to the bed without a wheelbarrow and store unused bags for later. For larger projects, bulk mulch delivered by the truckload is significantly cheaper -- typically $25 to $50 per cubic yard vs. $4 to $7 per 2 cu ft bag (which works out to $54 to $94.50 per cubic yard).

When to Mulch

Apply mulch in mid-to-late spring after the soil has warmed. This prevents the mulch from insulating cold soil and delaying plant growth. In fall, you can top off existing mulch to protect roots through winter. Most mulch breaks down over a season and needs to be refreshed annually.

How to Apply

  • Remove old mulch if it is matted or decomposed beyond recognition
  • Edge beds with a spade or edger for a clean line
  • Spread mulch evenly to the desired depth
  • Keep mulch 2-3 inches away from tree trunks and plant stems
  • Water lightly after application to settle the mulch in place

Frequently Asked Questions

How much mulch do I need?

Measure your bed area in square feet, then multiply by the desired depth in feet (divide inches by 12). For example, a 10 x 20 ft bed at 3 inches deep needs 200 x 0.25 = 50 cubic feet, or about 1.85 cubic yards. Use this calculator to get exact numbers for any shape.

How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?

A cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. Standard 2 cu ft bags: you need 13.5 bags (round up to 14). Standard 3 cu ft bags: you need 9 bags. Always round up since bags cannot be split.

Is it cheaper to buy mulch in bulk or bags?

Bulk is almost always cheaper per cubic yard for large quantities. A typical 2 cu ft bag at $4.50 works out to about $60 per cubic yard. Bulk mulch typically costs $25 to $50 per cubic yard, though delivery fees ($50 to $100) can offset savings for small orders. The break-even point is usually around 3 cubic yards.

How deep should mulch be?

Most garden beds need 2 to 4 inches. Fine mulches (shredded hardwood) work well at 2 inches, while coarser mulches (wood chips, bark nuggets) need 3 to 4 inches for weed suppression. Never exceed 4 inches for wood mulch around plants -- too much blocks water and air from reaching roots.

How often should I replace mulch?

Most organic mulch (wood chips, shredded bark) should be topped off annually in spring. You do not need to remove old mulch unless it has become matted or compacted. Simply add enough fresh mulch to bring the total depth back to the recommended level.

Mulch Calculator FAQ

How much mulch do I need?

Measure your bed area in square feet, then multiply by the desired depth in feet. This gives you the volume in cubic feet. Divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards. For example, a 10 x 20 ft bed at 3 inches deep needs 200 x 0.25 = 50 cubic feet, or about 1.85 cubic yards.

How deep should mulch be?

Most garden beds need 2 to 4 inches of mulch. Use 2 inches for fine mulch like shredded hardwood, 3 inches for medium mulch like wood chips, and 4 inches for coarse mulch like pine bark nuggets. Avoid piling mulch deeper than 4 inches as it can prevent water from reaching plant roots.

How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?

A cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. If you use standard 2 cubic foot bags, you need 13.5 bags per cubic yard. With 3 cubic foot bags, you need 9 bags per cubic yard.

Is it cheaper to buy mulch in bulk or bags?

Bulk mulch is usually cheaper for large areas (over 3 cubic yards). Bagged mulch costs $3 to $7 per bag (2 cu ft) while bulk mulch typically costs $25 to $50 per cubic yard. For small beds, bags are more convenient with less waste.
