About This Multi Tone Generator

This multi tone generator plays several pure tones at once, directly in your browser using the Web Audio API. Each tone has its own frequency, waveform, and volume, so you can experiment with how different frequencies mix — something a single-tone generator can't show you. No audio files are downloaded; every sound is synthesised in real time and nothing is sent to a server.

How to use it

  • Press Play All to start every tone, then adjust each one live.
  • Set the frequency with the number box or slider; the matching musical note is shown.
  • Pick a waveform per tone — sine is pure, square and sawtooth are harsher.
  • Balance the mix with each tone's volume and the master volume.
  • Switch a tone to Pulsing to make it turn on and off at a chosen rate.
  • Use Mute to silence a tone without removing it, or the × button to delete it.

What you can do with it

  • Build chords (try the major-chord preset) and hear how intervals sound together.
  • Demonstrate beat frequencies by playing two tones a few Hz apart.
  • Test how speakers or headphones handle bass, midrange, and treble at the same time.
  • Create simple intermittent test or alert signals with pulsing mode.
  • Explore how added harmonics change the timbre of a sound.

Privacy & Limitations

  • All audio is generated locally in your browser -- nothing is recorded or sent to any server.
  • Layered tones add together, so several loud tones can be much louder than one. Start at a low volume.
  • Actual output depends on your device, speakers, or headphones and their frequency response.

Multi Tone Generator FAQ

What is a multi tone generator?

A multi tone generator plays several pure tones at the same time, each with its own frequency, waveform, and volume. It lets you hear how different frequencies combine — useful for testing chords, beat frequencies, speaker behaviour, and your own hearing.

How many tones can I play at once?

You can play up to eight tones simultaneously. Use the "Add tone" button to add voices and the remove button on each row to delete them. Start with two or three and build up.

What is the pulsing mode for?

Pulsing turns a tone on and off repeatedly at a rate you set (in Hz). This is handy for alarm-style test signals, attention tones, or comparing a steady tone against an intermittent one. Continuous mode keeps the tone playing without interruption.

Why do I hear a wobble when two tones are close together?

When two frequencies are very close (for example 440 Hz and 444 Hz) you hear a slow pulsing called a beat. The beat rate equals the difference between the two frequencies, so 440 Hz and 444 Hz produce a 4 Hz wobble. Try the "Beat frequency" preset to hear it.

Is the audio sent to a server?

No. Every tone is synthesised in real time in your browser with the Web Audio API. Nothing is recorded or uploaded, and closing the tab stops all sound.

Can I damage my speakers or hearing with this tool?

Keep the master volume moderate, especially with several loud tones layered together, since they add up. Very high frequencies and high volumes can be uncomfortable. Start quiet and raise the level gradually, particularly when using headphones.
