What is a Percentile?
A percentile indicates the value below which a given percentage of observations fall. For example, if you score in the 85th percentile on a test, you scored higher than 85% of test-takers.

There are several methods to calculate percentile rank. This calculator uses the "percentage of values below" method:
Finding a Value at a Given Percentile
To find the value at the Pth percentile, we use linear interpolation:
If the index is not a whole number, we interpolate between adjacent values.
Key Percentiles (Quartiles)
- Q1 (25th percentile): First quartile — 25% of data falls below
- Q2 (50th percentile): Median — 50% of data falls below
- Q3 (75th percentile): Third quartile — 75% of data falls below
- IQR (Interquartile Range): Q3 - Q1, measures the middle 50% spread
