Understanding Percentiles

What is a Percentile?

A percentile indicates the value below which a given percentage of observations fall. For example, if you score in the 85th percentile on a test, you scored higher than 85% of test-takers.

Percentile Rank Formula

There are several methods to calculate percentile rank. This calculator uses the "percentage of values below" method:

Percentile Rank = (Number of values below x / Total count) × 100

Finding a Value at a Given Percentile

To find the value at the Pth percentile, we use linear interpolation:

Index = (P / 100) × (n - 1) + 1

If the index is not a whole number, we interpolate between adjacent values.

Key Percentiles (Quartiles)

  • Q1 (25th percentile): First quartile — 25% of data falls below
  • Q2 (50th percentile): Median — 50% of data falls below
  • Q3 (75th percentile): Third quartile — 75% of data falls below
  • IQR (Interquartile Range): Q3 - Q1, measures the middle 50% spread

Common Percentile Uses

  • Standardized Testing: SAT, ACT, GRE scores reported as percentiles
  • Growth Charts: Child height/weight compared to peers
  • Income Distribution: Understanding wealth inequality
  • Performance Reviews: Comparing employee performance
  • Quality Control: Identifying outliers in manufacturing

Percentile vs Percentage

These are often confused but are different concepts:

  • Percentage: A portion out of 100 (e.g., "You got 85% on the test" means 85/100 correct)
  • Percentile: Your rank compared to others (e.g., "85th percentile" means you beat 85% of test-takers)

  • All calculations run entirely in your browser -- nothing is sent to any server.
  • Results are computed using standard formulas and should be verified for critical applications.
