About ROT13

ROT13 ("rotate by 13 places") is a simple letter substitution cipher that replaces each letter with the letter 13 positions after it in the alphabet. Since there are 26 letters, applying ROT13 twice returns the original text—making it perfectly symmetrical.

Example: "Hello" becomes "Uryyb"

Note: ROT13 only affects letters (A-Z, a-z). Numbers, punctuation, and special characters remain unchanged.

Common Uses of ROT13

• Hiding spoilers: Movie, book, and game spoilers are often ROT13-encoded so readers must actively decode them

ROT13 vs Caesar Cipher

ROT13's advantage: because 13 is exactly half of 26, the same operation encodes AND decodes. Other Caesar shifts require different operations for each direction.
