How to Measure Your Foot

For the most accurate conversion, measure your foot length in centimeters and use the CM/JP system. Here is how:

1

Prepare

Place a sheet of paper on a hard floor against a wall. Wear the socks you would normally wear with shoes.

2

Stand

Stand on the paper with your heel firmly against the wall. Distribute your weight evenly on both feet.

3

Mark

Have someone mark the tip of your longest toe (not always the big toe) with a pen or pencil.

4

Measure

Measure the distance from the wall (heel) to the mark in centimeters. Repeat for the other foot and use the larger measurement.

Tips for accurate measurement:
  • Measure your feet in the afternoon or evening when they are at their largest.
  • Always measure both feet -- most people have one foot slightly larger than the other.
  • Use the longer foot measurement when selecting shoe size.
  • If you are between sizes, go up to the next half size for comfort.
  • Different brands may fit differently even at the same labeled size.

Understanding Shoe Size Systems

US Sizing

The US shoe sizing system uses a numerical scale that differs between men, women, and children. Women's US sizes are typically 1.5 to 2 sizes larger than men's for the same foot length. For example, a women's US 9 corresponds roughly to a men's US 7.5. Half sizes are common and represent about 4mm (1/6 inch) difference in foot length.

UK Sizing

The UK system is based on the barleycorn unit (1/3 inch or 8.46mm). UK sizes for men are generally 0.5 to 1 size smaller than US men's sizes. UK women's sizes are approximately 2 sizes smaller than US women's sizes. The UK system is also used in Australia and New Zealand.

EU (European) Sizing

European sizes use the Paris point system, where each size represents 2/3 of a centimeter (6.67mm). EU sizes are unisex -- the same EU number corresponds to the same foot length regardless of gender. Common EU sizes range from about 35 to 48 for adults.

CM / JP Sizing

The centimeter (CM) system, also called Mondopoint or JP (Japan) sizing, is the most straightforward: the size number equals the foot length in centimeters. For example, a CM 27.0 shoe fits a foot that is 27.0 cm long. This system is standard in Japan and is increasingly used internationally because of its precision.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert US shoe size to EU?

For men, add approximately 33 to your US size (e.g., US 10 = EU 43). For women, add approximately 31 (e.g., US 8 = EU 39). However, the relationship is not perfectly linear across all sizes, so use the converter above for accurate results.

Are UK and US sizes the same?

No. For men, UK sizes are about 0.5 to 1 size smaller than US sizes. For women, the difference is larger -- UK sizes are about 2 sizes smaller than US sizes. Always check a conversion chart rather than assuming they are equivalent.

What if I am between two sizes?

If your foot measurement falls between two sizes, it is generally best to go with the larger size for comfort, especially for athletic or walking shoes. For dress shoes with a snugger fit, the smaller size may work if only a half-size difference.

Do shoe sizes vary by brand?

Yes. Shoe sizes are not perfectly standardized across manufacturers. A US 10 in one brand may fit differently than a US 10 in another. The CM/JP system is most reliable since it directly corresponds to foot length. When buying from a new brand, check their specific size chart if available.

How do children's sizes transition to adult sizes?

Children's US sizes go up to about 13.5, after which they transition to adult sizes starting at US 1 (men's) or US 2-3 (women's). A child's US 13 is approximately 19.1 cm, while an adult men's US 1 is about 20 cm.
