Tally Counter -- Online Click Counter

Count anything with multiple named counters

Tally Counter

A tally counter is a simple tool for counting things one press at a time. Add as many named counters as you need, tap the big +1 and -1 buttons, set a custom step size, and watch the running total update live. Your counts are saved locally in your browser, so they survive a page reload.

Tip: click a counter to focus it, then press Space or Enter to add one step. Counts are stored only on this device and never uploaded.

What You Can Count

A handheld clicker is a familiar sight at concert doors, on running tracks, and in classrooms. This online version does the same job on any device you already carry, with the bonus of running several counters side by side and adding them into a single total. Because everything is stored locally, you can close the tab and come back later without losing your place.

Events and crowds

Count people entering a venue, attendance at a meeting, or visitors at a booth. Keep separate counters for different doors and let the running total give you the grand count.

Fitness and sports

Track reps, sets, laps, or pitches. Use the step size to count in groups, and add one counter per exercise or per player to compare side by side.

Crafts and hobbies

Count knitting and crochet rows, stitches, or pattern repeats. The minus button quickly fixes a miscount without starting over, and your progress is saved between sessions.

Surveys and inventory

Tally bird sightings, traffic by vehicle type, stock on a shelf, or items in a category. Multiple named counters keep each category clean and separate.

How to Use the Click Counter

  • Add a counter: press "Add counter" to create a new card. Each starts at zero with a step size of one.
  • Count up or down: tap the large green +1 button to add, or the -1 button to subtract. The number can go negative if you keep subtracting.
  • Rename it: tap the name at the top of a card and type a label such as "Front door" or "Set A".
  • Change the step: set the step field to count in twos, fives, or any whole number. Each card has its own step.
  • Reset or remove: use Reset to send one counter back to zero, or the small x button to delete a card you no longer need.
  • Keyboard counting: click a card to focus it (a teal outline appears), then press Space or Enter to add one step at a time.
  • Start over: "Clear all" removes every counter and the saved data on this device.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a tally counter?

A tally counter is a tool for counting items one at a time, like people entering a venue, laps in a race, or repetitions during exercise. This online version replaces the handheld clicker with large on-screen plus and minus buttons, so you can count on any phone, tablet, or computer for free.

How do I use this online click counter?

Tap the large +1 button each time you want to add to the count, or the -1 button to subtract. Use Reset to set a counter back to zero. You can add several named counters at once, give each a custom step size, and watch the running total update across all of them.

Can I count multiple things at the same time?

Yes. Press "Add counter" to create as many separate counters as you need. Each one has its own name, value, and step size, and there is a running total that sums every counter. This is useful for inventory categories, polls, sports stats, or counting different items in a single session.

Does the counter remember my values after I close the page?

Yes. Your counters, their names, values, and step sizes are saved in your browser using localStorage. When you reopen the page on the same device and browser, your counts are still there. Use the Clear all button to wipe everything and start fresh.

Is my counting data sent to a server?

No. Everything runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your counters are stored only on your own device using localStorage and are never uploaded, shared, or tracked. Clearing your browser data will remove them.

What is the step size for?

The step size is how much each +1 or -1 press changes the count. Set it to 1 for normal counting, 2 to count in pairs, 5 for tallies of five, or any whole number you like. Each counter can have a different step size.

Can I use the keyboard to count?

Yes. Click or tab to a counter to focus it, then press Space or Enter to increment it by its step size. This makes rapid counting easy on a laptop or desktop without reaching for the mouse each time.

Can the count go negative?

Yes. Pressing -1 below zero produces negative numbers, which is handy for tracking net change, gains and losses, or score differences. If you prefer to stop at zero, simply use Reset instead of going below it.

Is this tally counter free?

Yes, it is completely free with no sign-up and no limits on how many counters you create or how high you count. It works offline once the page has loaded.

What can I use a tally counter for?

Common uses include counting people at an event or door, attendance, laps and reps, knitting and crochet rows, bird and wildlife surveys, stocktaking and inventory, sports scores, votes in a quick poll, and steps in a checklist.

Privacy & Limitations

  • Local storage only. Your counters and their values are saved using your browser's localStorage. This data stays only on your device and is never uploaded to any server, shared, or tracked.
  • Per-device, per-browser. Counts saved in one browser will not appear in a different browser or on another device. Private or incognito windows may not retain data after they close.
  • Clearing data. Pressing "Clear all", clearing your browser storage, or using site-data cleanup will permanently remove your counters. There is no backup.
  • Whole-number steps. The counter is designed for whole-number counting. Very large numbers are limited by standard JavaScript integer precision.
